Nichee_Logo_ColorWe’re excited to announce the 2016 Nichee Award winners!

NICHEE Winners 2016

These twelve magazines demonstrate excellence in the niche media space and have really dialed in on their niche market. Congratulations to all our winners and a big thank you to Trend Offset Printing for sponsoring the Nichee Award bash in Austin, TX! The 2016 winners are:

Niche Consumer Magazine of the Decade: VegNews

VegNews CoverVegNews demonstrates ongoing, consistently strong performance across all niche categories. Editorial perfectly matched to the needs of its audience, gorgeous visuals and design, well-matched advertising tightly targeted to their niche, and an alignment with their reader’s core values and needs.

Niche B2B Magazine of the Decade: Multi-Unit Franchisee

This a huge award, the first of its kind, goes to a B2B publication that truly serves the specific information needs of its market. Multi-Unit Franchisee delivers meaty, strong editorial that helps franchise owners run more profitable and successful businesses by focusing on best practices and growth strategies that work.

Best Niche Consumer Magazine: Concealed Carry

This amazing publication is truly a resource manual for every aspect of self-defense with a firearm — from ethics to tactics to the psychology of personal defense and its legal aftermath. Concealed Carry is not your typical gun magazine!

Best Niche B2B Magazine: Concrete Decor

The judges were hugely impressed with what the Concrete Decor team is doing. This magazine showcases exemplary work in decorative concrete. With their magazine’s solid editorial, design, and their annual tradeshow, they are making good on their mission to change the way the world looks at concrete.

Best New Niche B2B Magazine: Biz 417

Biz 417 published their first issue in November 2015 as the only business magazine in their market.  They’ve already sold out their entire ad inventory for the first year, they’re launching an event, and building audience and revenue at breakneck speed. Basically, they’re doing everything right in Year One.

Best Niche Association Magazine: AOPA Pilot

Published for the members of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, AOPA Pilot is a magazine by pilots, for pilots — they are totally, totally aligned with the needs of their niche. They’ve got a clean format in which they provide content that goes beyond association news bits and bites to stories that matter to the industry.

Best Niche Digital Magazine: China Business Review

China Business Review is the lead source of specialized content for US companies doing business in China — from CEOs to service providers to manufacturers. This online publication beautifully integrates multi-media, it is fully designed and formatted for seamless online and mobile viewing and addressing their audience’s need for real-time information.

Best Niche Consumer Regional Magazine (tie): Omaha Magazine

It isn’t every day a city magazine can be called controversial and cutting-edge. Backed by solid design and rich editorial, Omaha Magazine is truly challenging what a city magazine can be and what it can do. A cover story on human trafficking in the heartland — not what you might expect from a city and regional!

Best Niche Consumer Regional Magazine (tie): Fargo Monthly

Fargo Monthly impressed the judging panel with their print and online integration, great use of local photography, and creative design and content that pushes the boundaries of city and regional publications.

Best Niche Weekly Magazine: NOW Toronto

NOW Toronto captivated our judges with the strength of their editorial — they’ve got great design, compelling content. They’re a free distribution weekly that doesn’t look and feel like a free distribution weekly.

Best Niche Arts & Culture Magazine: Artslandia

Artslandia connects readers to Portland’s hugely vibrant music, dance, and theater scene. Our judges couldn’t find enough superlatives to describe the photography and graphic design in this magazine. It is absolutely gorgeous! (Plus, they’ve got bragging rights — they’ve been covering Portland art “long before it was cool.”)

The Spirit of Niche Magazines: Greenhead

We encourage magazines to niche their niches if they want to truly connect with an audience. Our Spirit of Niche winner takes the concept of niche to the Nth degree: a niche publication for executive duck hunting enthusiasts in Arkansas! Greenhead is a truly outstanding magazine that is the go-to resource in its niche.

Robyn_New_webAbout the author: Robyn Ireland is Niche Media’s Operations Manager and Swiss Army Knife. After a decade in with niche nonprofits she dove into the niche publishing and event world and found they weren’t that different (once you get past the nonprofit part). She has far too much fun at Niche Media HQ and keeps taking her standard poodle Susie to work even though she’s a lousy typist.
