Your Guide to Austin Fun for the 2016 Niche Media Conference

The Sheraton Austin Hotel at the Capitol (conference headquarters)
701 East 11th Street
Phone: (512) 478-1111

The Sheraton Austin Hotel at the Capitol is located right near the heart of Austin’s hopping nightlife. Live music, great food, and Austin’s weird (and proud of it!) culture await you. Austin is the live music capital of the world – there are literally hundreds of venues where you can listen to live music. Plus, the dining here is fresh, down-home and eclectic. Ask the hotel for a map and hit the town. Here are just a few of our favorites…..

Right Near Hotel: Best BBQ on the planet? Stroll right across the street from the hotel. Be prepared to wait, but it’s worth it if you have the time. World famous Franklin BBQ on 900 E. 11th St. Or check out the Roaring Fork at 701 Congress, or farm-to-fork Parkside on E. 6th. Okay, if you want to be super healthy, try the Asian-fusion-veg menu and causal vibe at Koriente on 621 E. 7th St.

Sixth Street (1 mile from hotel) is the part that most visitors think of, the Bourbon Street-like atmosphere of Historic Sixth Street is still a raucous music party with tons of bars, restaurants and pedicabs darting through crowds. Check out Esther’s Follies at 525 E. 6th St for a super-entertaining show. Prepare to laugh!!!

Or head to the Red River District nearby and have dinner with a down-home vibe at popular Moonshine Patio Bar & Grill. Great music venue? Empire Control Room & Garage at 606 E 7th St. Looking for a beer garden? Try the Easy Tiger on 709 E. 6th St.

And then there’s Rainey Street, (1.1 miles from hotel),  a cool hipster neighborhood of historic bungalows, where you’ll find craft beer, good food and locals, about 1.1 miles from hotel. Great place to chill, seating indoors and out. Try Icenhauers, Craft Pride, Lustre Pearl or Clive Bar. Looking for dinner? Try Emmer & Rye for delectable dim sum or Geraldine’s.

Best newbie restaurant on the scene?? Just a 1.2 mile stroll from hotel is Wu Chow at 500 W. 5th St. Try the Shanghai soup dumplings, Tangerine-peel beef and tiki cocktails!

Just to say you did it: Further down on West 6th Street is where you’ll be surprised by the restaurants-within-a-grocery store (complete with beer garden) and the birthplace of Whole Foods. WF also shares the stretch with upscale eateries like Cafe Josie at 1200 W. 6th St, and shop the cool retail stores.

The SoCo (South of Congress) district is just plain fun. Try Little Barrel and Brown at 1716 South Congress, or South Congress Café or Perlas for people-watching. Guero’s Taco Bar for you know, great tacos.

For an incredible nature walk or run on the wild side:

Whew! There’s SO many great places to have fun in Austin!!
