We all work together at our niche media company for 8, 12, 14 hours a day. Right? Why not make it fun? I’m a firm believer that the more fun you have, the more
efficient and hard-working your team will be. Plus it inspires creativity and helps with employee retention. Research proves this out!
When I actually worked for a living (pre-Niche Event Nation/Niche Media), I had a magazine publishing company called Niche Publications. We published 3 magazines and held 1 national event. We had a staff of about 15 people. We worked a lot, had a ton of fun and made a lot of money. Part of the secret was building a fun work environment.
Here are just a few “fun” ideas to keep your team inspired…
1. Hold Company Fun Days! Once a month we would take a 1/2 day off and do something fun, like take a tour of a brewery or a tour of the Jelly Belly Factory near us. (We actually did this in one day, but I wouldn’t recommend it–beer and a sugar high are not a great combo). This was great for team bonding and refueled our creative energy.
2. Take each employee to lunch on a regular basis to share ideas. Once a month I’d take a different staffer to lunch. This was great, because in a relaxed atmosphere I would get to know each person better and really get solid ideas from them about how to run the company better. We could share ideas and brainstorm in a totally casual setting. Often I would get creative new project ideas from employees, too. One of the very best ideas that made us a lot of money came from a 20 year old intern.
3. Give a holiday break off between Christmas and New Years. Everyone was very happy to move up the production schedule early so that we could close down for the holiday week. And this was not considered vacation time for them. Employees just got the time off. The fact of the matter is no one works much that week anyway, if at all. And I was hero to the employees and their families. And we still got the magazines out on time.
These are just a few ideas. We did a many more “fun” company activities, but I really think this made “work” way more fun and ultimately way more profitable. We would love to hear any “fun” company stuff you do at your niche media company. Share with us on on Facebook or Twitter.
